By the year 2030, the UK government plans to prohibit the sale of diesel and petrol powered cars. Various reasons – mostly environment – have lawmakers gunning for the end of the ICE (internal combustion engine). Still, as least plug-in hybrids will be available until 2035.
But what’s the situation in South Africa?
Well, electric vehicles certainly don’t enjoy the popularity that they do abroad – particularly in Europe and America. Part of the reason is cost. While numerous foreign governments incentivise the purchase of electric vehicles, the South African government currently does not. ICE engines are levied with an 18% import duty. But their battery-powered companions? 25%.
This makes them considerably more expensive to buy. Still, that hasn’t stopped various car makers from punting their emission-free models to eco-conscious South Africans. Email us for more information on our preparedness info@kaysha.co.za
